Just found out license is suspended?

My husband and I tried to get new car insurance and the agent told us that his license expired in october of 2006. They said it was because he did not show up in court for a citation he received. We never got anything regarding a court date or fine. We went to the DMV and they told us that it was suspended and we had to go to the courthouse. We are going to the courthouse tomorrow to see what they want us to do. We live in Maryland and so I just want to know what they usually do if you didn't know it was suspended.
